Modified Bike Champion Q & A: Simon Garbutt

After finishing Runner - up last season, Simon Garbutt was able to go one better this season and win his first WA Modified Bike Championship. It was a close championship battle with former WA champion Ian Read just 5 points separating the two riders at the end of the season. We asked Simon a few questions about his championship season.

Congratulations on winning your first WA Drag Racing Championships, What does it mean to you win the championship?

Thank you WADRA, Our modified bike field in WA at current has become a very tough playground to develop a bike and strategy to succeed in the last few years. We have many young riders in the class proving themselves along with the well experienced riders like Paul Nieuwhof, Brian Hotker, Ray Easson and Ian Read. I see this win as a testament to how hard I and the crew have worked this season. It is great to achieve one spot further then what we did last year to win a championship.

What was the highlight of your season?

Highlight of the season for me was our first event seeing the Two Savage Motorcycles sponsored bikes qualifying in First and Second place with myself then going on to win the event. It made for some great banter at the track with J Mac and our crews.

What are you plans for next season?

We are currently are unsure of what next season looks like for us. Ultimately we would like to go to a car tyre chassis setup but that may be some time away.

Who would you like to thank?

Thank you to our amazing sponsors Savage Motorcycles, Power on Plant Hire, and Consolidated Group. Without your support, we wouldn't be able to do what we love and achieve our dreams. Their contributions have been invaluable to our success, and we're so grateful for everything they all have done for us. I also want to thank our incredible crew and extended bike family for their hard work and dedication - we couldn't have done it without you either! Let's not forget about the track staff and officials, who work tirelessly to make sure everything runs smoothly and safe. Thank you all for your hard work and support. Big thank you to Sharpie, Matt & Paul who have made this season a great success for the Motorplex. Thank you also to my daughter for being so involved in my racing at such a young age, I can't wait to see where she developes to later in life within a sport, Hopefully one that revolves around the great Motorplex Facility like myself.
